Concepts we are learning

  • HOLIDAY TRADITIONS - learning about and sharing how we celebrate holidays.
  • Continuing practice with previous and ongoing CONCEPTS - Checking for engagement and understanding while providing support and extensions as needed.
Ongoing:
  • KIND and SAFE in class and on the yard 
  • RESPONSIBLE - following directions (even when we don't want to)
  • Whole BODY LISTENING– EYES are Watching, EARS are Listening, BODIES are Still/Safe, VOICES are Quiet, HEART is Caring & BRAIN is Thinking
  • FEELING WORDS (Happy, Sad, Scared, Surprised, Excited, Frustrated, etc.) and  ways to CALMING OUR BODY when needed - 5 FINGER BREATHING and BUTTERFLY HUG/TAPPING
  • Practice COMMUNICATING our WANTS (it is okay to not always get what we want) and NEEDS (getting comfortable asking and asserting needs) with class partners.
  • RHYMING WORDS- listen for rhyming words in books, songs, chants, games, etc.
  • WORDS to Label objects in the room - this helps in learning that words have meaning and is a precursor to reading
  • DAYS of the Week/MONTHS of the year 
  • LETTERS and NUMBERS are made up of LINES and CURVES
  • MAGIC C  song to remember how to make C
  • UPPER CASE letters start at the TOP - WHERE DO YOU START YOUR LETTERS SONG
  • SPELLING our NAMES with lines and curves using wooden/magnet pieces
  • Practice listening for BEGINNING, MIDDLE & ENDING SOUND in the names of the students in our class and other words
  • Use "MAT MAN" technique to draw ourselves and others
  • Practice adding DETAILS to Pictures we draw
  • REMEMBER the NAMES of students in our class
  • ECHO READING (sentences students dictated and in beginner reading books)
    (noticing space between each word and pointing to words while saying them)
  • COUNTING and IDENTIFYING NUMBERS with various maniplatives
  • ONE-to-ONE CORRESPONDENCE while counting objects
  • SHAPES and PATTERNS
  • MORE and LESS
  • Continuing practice with previous and ongoing CONCEPTS - Checking for engagement and understanding while providing support and extensions as needed.
 
  • Turned our finger-painted paper into PUMPKINS - drew lines on pumpkins to give them a more realistic look
  • Discovered  how pumpkins grow
  • Practiced using complete sentences when answering questions
  • Practiced using DESCRIPTIVE WORDS to describe things in our environment 
  • Practiced writing MAGIC C and noticed what letters have a Magic C
  • EXPLORED LETTERS and WORDS with various puzzles, and letter manipulatives, taking note of the difference between upper case and lower case letters
  • ONE-to-ONE CORRESPONDENCE when ECHO READING beginner reading books
  • All about ONE and TWO - counted, wrote, used manipulatives to represent 1 and 2, found what we have 2 of, more and less than 1 and 2 
  • Practiced COUNTING in ORDER 1 to 18 (number of students in our class), and then COUNTING BACKWARDS 18-1
  • Read to find out why some LEAVES CHANGE COLORS in FALL/AUTUMN
  • EXAMINED LEAVES and talked about what we noticed
  • Made paper leaves and tissue paper apples to fill our class tree
  • Learned the parts of a tree 
  • Compared APPLES with PUMPKINS - how are they the same and different
  • FINGER PAINTED with YELLOW and RED to make ORANGE - when dry we will turn them into pumpkins
  • All about ZERO and ONE - counted, wrote, used manipulatives to represent 0 and 1, found what we have 1 of, more and less than 0 and 1 
  •  MAGIC C  song to remember how to make C
  • PATTERNS - recognized patterns in the room and in our environment and practiced making patterns with manipulatives. 
  • Observed PARTS of APPLE - core, seeds, skin, flesh, stem, leaf
  • APPLE EXPERIMENT- What will happen to an apple left out, one with skin and one without?
  • Practiced listening for BEGINNING SOUNDS in all the names of the students in our class and other objects in our environment
  • Play-Doh - strengthened our hand muscles by squeezing and molding play-doh into various objects and to write our name
  • School-wide DISASTER DRILL - followed directions for how to be safe in case of an earthquake
  • Practiced COMMUNICATING our WANTS (it is okay to not always get what we want) and NEEDS (getting comfortable asking and asserting needs) with class partners.

  • APPLE TASTING - Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, and Red Delicious using our five senses.
  • How are the apples the SAME? How are the apples DIFFERENT?
  • BAR GRAPH to show the apple we liked best - used the words MORE & LESS and How many more to talk about the graph
  • COMPARED the Birthday Graph to the Apple graph
  • Read the Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons - introduced the FOUR SEASONS of the year
  • Letters make sounds    
  • Practiced listening for BEGINNING SOUNDS of words
  • Read Moon Festival Wishes by Jillian Lin about the special Chinese holiday called the Mid-Autumn Festival.  It is one of the biggest Chinese celebrations.  It falls on the night of the full moon every year either during the end of September or the beginning of October.  It is a time to be thankful for the moon and harvest.  

    As a celebration of the moon and the Chinese culture, the Chinese PTA has provided every Montemalaga student a squishy TOY in the shape of a Mooncake.
