A Message from the Principal…
Montemalaga Elementary August-September 2019
We have been busy at Montemalaga this summer getting ready for the start of the 2019-2020 school year.  We welcome two new staff members:
Grade 5 Teacher, Mr. David Barro
            Reading Specialist, Mrs. Lisa Nicolello
Mr. Barro is teaching in room 16 and Mrs. Nicolello will be in a second Learning Center area, Room 6.  Our English Language support providers will also now be in room 6.  Both David and Lisa have worked in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District for several years.  Lisa will be our school’s Reading Specialist working Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  She will also be working at Lunada Bay Elementary every Tuesday and Thursday.  Lisa will be teaching closely with our faculty to provide reading support to students.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is now located in K-2 and Mrs. Gardner is excited to be teaching our TK program.  Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Duncan will continue teaching Kindergarten for the next school year.
Montemalaga has ten new fruit trees. Thank you, PTA, for your support finishing the orchard project.  Thank you to the Cunningham family for giving our Health Office a new fresh look this summer.  We appreciate everything that our parents do to make our school an inviting and supportive learning environment.
Two Eagle Scout Projects are taking place on our campus.  The first Eagle Scout is creating an outside activity/game area by the Health Office.  There will be a new Lego Table and Lego storage for students to create and build at recess and at lunch.  Also new to the outside area are two chess/checker tables for quiet play as an alternative for being on the playground.  Montemalaga students will be able to have designated recess and lunch times when they can play the new outside games.  The second Eagle Scout project includes enhancing the first grade area.  A bench will be built around the tree in front of room1 and the lunch carts will be now parked on a non-muddy area of crushed granite.  The second project also includes refinishing the backpack shelves in front of rooms 1 and 2.  The Eagle Scout projects have greatly benefitted the students attending our school!
Thank you, PTA, for completing the installation of safety blinds in additional classrooms this summer.  We have rooms 11, 12, 13, and 18 left to complete this project.  The PTA has been allocating funds for safety blinds in all classrooms over the past few years.  Thanks again for helping to keep our students safe!
Last June, the Student Council purchased a small lending library for the neighborhood.  It is in front of the Kindergarten yard.  Your books are welcome for our Little Free Library.  Books should be ones you recommend to friends, your childhood favorites, and books that teach and spark conversations.

TK-K and New Family Social is August 22 9:00-11:00 in the Kindergarten/TK yard
School starts on Wednesday, August 28.  We will follow a minimum day schedule for the first day of school:  TK 8:30-11:45 and K-5 8:30-noon.
You will notice new SOAR student guidelines posted in many areas around school.  The staff has worked many hours planning and developing the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) for Montemalaga.  Golden Feather cards will be given to students.  You will hear about weekly drawings, monthly lunches with the principal, and students honored at regularly scheduled SPIRIT Days throughout the year.  Please be sure to read the Weekly updates posted each Friday on Edlio.  Communicate with your child’s teacher regularly and know that my office always has an open door.
Attendance is vital for school success.  There are 365 days in a year.  Only 180 of those are school days.  The remaining 185 are for you to enjoy with your family and friends.  Please make every effort to be on time and to be present ready to learn.  If you need to be gone for 5 or more days, be sure to obtain an Independent Study form from the office.
I am looking forward to another great school year with the staff, students, and families of Montemalaga.  Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer relaxing and making memories!
See you soon,
Mrs. Jody Pastell, Principal
