A Message from the Principal
November-December 2018
Dear Montemalaga families,
The Montemalaga faculty and I have been reviewing data and monitoring student progress since the beginning of the new school year.   Through daily work, RtI Universal Screening, classroom intervention and report card grades we can track students’ knowledge of the state standards.  Data drives instruction.  Teachers are effectively planning and making changes to lessons based on student learning needs.  The school district is also planning effective ways to support student success.  Schools will be offering after school intervention for students needing support beginning after Winter Break.
The development of the “whole child” continues to be an important goal for Montemalaga and the PVPUSD.  As we increase the number of students who are proficient or exceeding state standards, we are also implementing our first year of PBIS- positive behavior intervention supports.  Montemalaga has a team attending training sessions and planning with the rest of the staff.  We are developing common expectations, behaviors for all areas of our school by students, staff and parents.  Emotional and social well-being is an important component of this plan.  We also have started the implementation of Second Step to help students make good choices, build good character, and to be mindful.  All classes are following Second Step lessons on a weekly basis.
I wanted you to have a better understanding of the focus for all students at Montemalaga.  Together we are a very strong team.  The teachers devote countless hours making sure that every day is filled with meaningful instruction.  Our teachers and staff have done an outstanding job connecting with students and truly getting to know every child on a personal level.  They make a difference each day! The PTA is amazing.  What a wonderful group of people!  If you can find the time, please get involved with one or more of the many activities happening at our school this year.
The Halloween festivities were great fun! The fall season is such an eventful time of the year.  We are all very excited thinking about enjoying special family togetherness during the upcoming holidays.  I always am especially thankful during these months.  Thankful for my family—my four children and their families- and for my Montemalaga family—which includes all of you!
Wishing you a very joyous holiday season filled with excitement, happiness, and memories.
Mrs. J. Pastell
