Montemalaga is doing a great job providing academic intervention for our students. Intervention is a general education function designed to support all students. This year our school district is using iReady as a screening tool. All students will be screened three times during the school year by teachers in the classrooms or in the technology lab. Screenings are in the area of reading and math. Teachers are able to monitor progress. Parents are able to request progress information either from the classroom teacher or from the school psychologist. Our school psychologist is doing the progress monitoring and making sure that individual student learning needs are improving. Parents are also able to have their child work with the computer software at home. Students work with the software thirty minutes weekly in the classroom. Parent permission for students needing this intervention has been sent home to parents.
There is also another level of intervention. If a student is needing additional intervention in order to be successful in school, the child will be recommended to spend at least thirty minutes weekly with the Reading Intervention Teacher, Mrs. Lisa Nicolello. Mrs. Nicolello (our Reading Specialist) will be working with students in first through fifth grades. She is located in room 6. Kindergarten students will begin intervention support in the winter of this school year. Grade 5 students requiring intervention will be working in small groups within the classroom. Parent permission is also required for this intervention support.
iReady diagnostics will also be helping determine the need for math intervention. Students needing math support will be determined once the reading support is implemented.
The next iReady diagnostic data screening will be in January. The last diagnostic data screening will be in May. Each screening will provide information to adjust the intervention groups as needed.
