Principal Update- May 29, 2020

June is almost here! The last few weeks of school will certainly look different this year. We have been busy planning and organizing for the collection of books, Chromebooks, musical instruments, etc.  Hopefully you have received the update indicating the designated time that you will be asked to come to school to drop-off books and to also pick-up any personal items from outside of the classroom.  In order to ensure just a few people on campus at a time, please follow the schedule sent last week. A copy of the schedule is included in this update for your convenience. Please follow these guidelines when on campus:

   1. Enter the school by going down the main hallway and placing books in the appropriate bins on the tables

   2. Maintain Social Distance Protocol-6 feet between people

   3. Student belongings are in bags outside of the classroom-all bags are clearly labeled with child’s name

   4. Exit the school by walking down the stairs by the portables and up the walkway to the parking lot

   5. K-1 and K-2 classrooms are to enter at the Kindergarten gate and exit through the gate maintaining Social
       Distance Protocol

   6. Wear masks while on campus

   7. Keep moving-do not stop to socialize and have conversations with teachers or friends- we are following a very
tight schedule and are monitoring the number of people on our campus-

   8. Chromebooks are to be checked-in at the office by June 11 or during your designated time on campus

   9. School staff will be monitoring hallways and classroom areas to ensure that people are moving quickly and are
returning to their cars within a few minutes-

Thanks, in advance, for making this drop-off/pick-up very successful and safe.

Next week is the last week of instruction.  Please take a moment and thank your child’s teacher for working very hard to make Distance Learning successful.  After next week, teachers will be having many fun activities and celebrations for the end of the year.

Just a reminder…on June 4 at 3:00 Montemalaga will have a TK/K welcome meeting via ZOOM for all the incoming TK and K students.  Thank you teachers and PTA for making this meeting possible!  See our PTA President if you would like to attend the welcome meeting.
Just a reminder…the school office will be open daily beginning Monday, June 1.  Please be sure to notify me if you have questions.

Have a relaxing weekend with your family!

Sincerely,
Jody Pastell
Principal

Principal Update  - May 22, 2020

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Summer break is almost here-The good news is many beaches, trails, outdoor areas are beginning to open giving all of us some outside opportunities for activity.  Enjoy!
There will be two more weeks of actual instruction with the last week of school being organized book collecting, electronic device check-in, and classroom celebrations.  I am very proud of the work that our students have done while distance learning.  Our Montemalaga teachers have been amazing planning, teaching, conferencing, and supporting all students.  I am very grateful and proud of the entire Montemalaga Staff.

Thank you, PTA, for discovering a way to have the Montemalaga Variety Show. The students enjoyed sharing their talent and the staff was very talented, too.    The Montemalaga staff learned some great dance moves under the direction of our Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Brown.

Montemalaga TK/Kindergarten Virtual Parent Welcome is scheduled for June 4 at 3:00.  PTA will be sending out information regarding this meeting to all our TK/Kindergarten families.  Thank you in advance to our TK/K team of teachers:  Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Duncan, and Ms. Brown for attending this meeting and for providing such helpful information.

Please begin looking for all lost school items in your home.  Students may pick up personal belongings outside of the classroom on June 8 or June 9.  All school items must be dropped off at school on June 8 or June 9 according to your last name.  Please refer to the schedule that was sent out on May 8.

Parents may be able to view student report cards beginning the last day of school. A hard copy report card will not be sent home this year.

June 9 will be our Drive-Through in the front parking lot promotion for grade 5 beginning at 1:30 in the afternoon.  Each grade 5 classroom has a specific time for arriving at school.  Please refer to the May 8 update. All teachers are welcome to stand on the sidewalk in front of the MPR to congratulate our 5thgraders as they drive through the parking lot.  Students may decorate their cars. Please make sure that the promotion signs are placed on the passenger side of the car- PTA will be providing instructions for picking-up the signs. Students and families will not be getting out of their cars during this celebration.  Every student will be receiving promotion awards as the class drives through.

I know that you join me in thanking Dr. Cherniss, our Superintendent, for advocating on behalf of PVPUSD at the state level.  We are hopeful that Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified will be granted additional funding to support the quality education that our students deserve.

Until next week’s update—Stay healthy and take care of your family.

Mrs. Jody Pastell

I was happy to hear that it is safe to do curbside pick-up for shopping and that several parks are now open.  I hope that your Mother’s Day celebrations are full of more options now that some restrictions have been lifted in Los Angeles County. Hoping for a relaxing weekend for everyone!

May 1, 2020  Principal's Update

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. It would be a perfect time for every single student to write a note of gratitude and thanks to their teacher. Our teachers have been working very hard planning, teaching lessons, attending professional development meetings and posting information during these weeks of Distance Learning. I am very proud of their accomplishments during this difficult time of not being in the classroom environment. Let's make Teacher Appreciation week very special for our teachers!

The Peninsula Education Foundation recently sent out Summer School information. Elementary online classes will focus mainly on math, reading, and writing. Summer School dates are June 22-July 17. Please refer to the Peninsula Education Foundation for Summer School information and registration. Also, as a result of the COVID-19 virus, the Peninsula Education Foundation had to cancel the Main Event. Weeks ago, district administrators made a promotional video for the Main Event. Even though it can not be used for this annual community event, the promotional video clearly shows the enthusiasm and unity of our district, community, and students. The link to the video is https://youtu.be/8uk6LTL_sbU

PEF is also holding an online auction May 9-May 15. Please check the Edlio posting for additional information next week.

I am hoping that we are able to see each other soon at Montemalaga.

Take care,

Mrs. J. Pastell

Principal’s Message for April 24, 2020

Today was a very eventful Friday.  At 11:00 this morning Montemalaga staff and I met to discuss a few very important items.  Our teachers are working long hours preparing and planning instruction for their classes.  Many of the learning experiences they are providing are promoting independence and opportunities very important to grade level standards.  We will be completing report cards for elementary grade students.  Exactly what the report cards will look like has not yet been determined.  Teachers are working and following the guidelines established by the Palos Verdes Faculty Association and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.  Grade levels are meeting and planning at least weekly, if not more often.  Please feel free to ask me any questions regarding the distance learning during this “stay at home” period.  I am very proud of our staff and know that we all are looking forward to the day when we can be back at Montemalaga.

Enrollment time is here!  Please be sure to contact the Enrollment Office at Malaga Cove to enroll any child who is now school age or any child who has not attended PVPUSD before.  Our classrooms fill quickly and knowing the numbers in classes before August is very helpful.  Thank you for your close attention to this matter.  Also, Montemalaga had scheduled our annual parent meeting for TK and K parents for Monday, May 4.  Since school is still closed, we will be postponing this meeting and I will post some additional information from our teachers about TK and K readiness.  Also, you need to know that TK screening will take place during the month of May.

And finally, it is with excitement, gratitude, and a heavy heart that I announced my retirement from PVPUSD- I will be working throughout the summer to ensure a smooth and successful transition for the new Principal Mrs. Sandi Tsosie.  Sandi has worked in the district for the past three years and will be a wonderful leader at Montemalaga Elementary.

The staff, students and families at Montemalaga have made such a huge difference in my life-Thank you for all the great experiences and memories.

Wishing you all the best,

Mrs. Jody Pastell

Principal's update - April 17, 2020

Thank you all for working so hard with your children during this “staying at home” period.  We all realize how difficult it is to balance work, school, play, home, etc. The teachers are working hard to balance life right now too.  Children are not expected to sit in front of a device for hours at a time.  They are expected to follow an organized schedule of activities and to let the teacher know when something requires more attention. Distance learning is a work in progress- and we are all in this together.  Parents can be very helpful by reviewing directions and expectations for the daily morning/afternoon activities with their children.  During classroom sessions, students are reminded to follow proper guidelines for online instruction.  Please refer to the link attached to this message regarding PVPUSD online etiquette.  When a child has a learning session, it should be regarded as a classroom setting.  This means that children come prepared with materials needed for the session, they are acting appropriately in front of the camera, they are not distracted with toys or other family members, and they are following the teacher’s requests.  Teachers will respond to questions and comments through emails, texts, or phone calls.  Please be sure to let us know any difficulties you might be experiencing.

You should have received notification about Enrichment classes this afternoon.  Please check the district website for the schedule of all online classes.  Also, our weekly Garden Instruction will be posted starting next week.  Speaking of fun activities, we have been discussing some great options for celebrating our Fifth Graders moving on to Intermediate School.  Once the plans are finalized, I will be sure to share any exciting news about promotion.
I am available to talk and offer support every day.  We have a very talented team of educators at Montemalaga.  Your boys and girls continue to learn the Essential Standards while having time with family to develop strong character traits and personality.

Best wishes for a fun family shared experience this weekend.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jody Pastell
Principal

Principal’s update - Friday, April 10, 2020

The rainy week has made it easier for all of us to stay home and follow the guidelines of protecting our health.  I hope that you and your loved ones are all discovering some special time together that is resulting in the creation of memories.  My grandson (Landon-in Sacramento) has taken the time to talk with my brother (Mike in Virginia) about planes he has flown over the past thirty years. A month ago, I am not sure if they would have made the quality time to talk since daily routines are always so busy.  However, Landon now knows more about KC 135s than he ever knew before!  Perhaps there is a silver lining to staying home and talking with families.

Our teachers are working daily, planning, teaching, and responding to emails and questions. All teachers are providing the Essential Standards and more to their students. Teachers are attending weekly Professional Development provided by the Technology and Curriculum Departments.   Montemalaga is fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented staff.  We would all prefer to be back in the classroom, and we hope that we can have that opportunity one of these months soon.  Be sure to check Edlio, emails, Office 365, etc. for information from teachers on a regular basis.  Let the teacher know if you have any concerns or questions.  I am also very willing to help answer any questions.   I have open office hours—this means I will respond to my emails almost as quickly as they are received.

Our support providers are often participating in Zoom sessions and working with small groups.   Our English Learner Support Team will also be reinforcing the classroom instruction.  Additionally, we are planning on holding all our annual IEP meetings and annual 504 meetings for the year.  Please email me with any questions.  On April 27, information regarding 6th grade scheduling and course selection will be sent to current grade 5 parents by email.  On May 4, the window will close for course selection.   More information will be coming in the next weeks.
Our Montemalaga PTA will be holding a General Meeting on April 21 at 3:30 PM.  This will be a Zoom meeting.  Please contact Annie Osswald if you would like to attend.

The faculty is working on a special message for all our students and families.  Please be sure to check Edlio and/or Twitter in the next day or so.

Wishing you all a quiet yet memorable weekend!

Jody Pastell,
Principal

I hope that Spring Break was spent doing many fun-family activities and projects. It is amazing to think about all the puzzles that we now have time to complete, the great new recipes we have the afternoon to try, or the garage shelves that finally get organized! Whatever you did, I hope you created some great memories with your family!
Teachers continue to plan and collaborate with their grade level to provide assignments and lessons for students. Be sure to check for posted assignments by 9:00 AM Monday and Wednesday mornings. Some teachers may post assignments two or three days at a time; while others may post the entire week on Monday morning. Please direct any questions about assignments to your classroom teacher. All teachers have live learning/connection time with their students. Please make sure that you know your class schedule and let the teacher know if you have questions. We will work together to resolve any concerns. The teachers and I appreciate all your hard work and understanding. All of us continue to try to figure out family schedules, work schedules, etc. We are looking forward to the day when we can have a "normal" day once again back at Montemalaga.

Wishing you all a great week back from Spring Break-

Spring Break 2020

A few months ago, when we were all thinking about Spring Break, we never thought that we would be staying home to remain healthy instead of traveling, going to the beach, or visiting friends and family.  I am hearing stories about how the “home” time is helping families to organize closets, garages, photographs, complete projects, and to just spend time with each other cooking, playing games, exercising, reading, etc. Whatever your daily activities are, be sure to enjoy the quality time.

I would like to thank all our teachers for working together, planning, and communicating instruction and information to students and parents.  The pandemic crisis came very quickly and the entire PVPUSD has been working nonstop to plan and support staff and the families in all schools.  With the additional weeks of the direction to “stay home”, the District is working with staff to provide consistent schedules for online instruction/connection for students.  I expect that after Spring Break I will be able to share updates with you regarding any changes with online instruction.  Thank you for working daily with your children to ensure that they are completing assignments and accessing the curriculum.  Together we will get through the next several weeks.  We are all looking forward to that Monday when we return to Montemalaga ready to start the week by hearing the ringing of the library bell.

Please stay healthy-

Mrs. Jody Pastell, Principal

Friday, March 20th Update

The Montemalaga faculty and I met this morning via Zoom and discussed what the extended learning model will look like at Montemalaga.  Teachers have done an outstanding job posting and communicating lessons for all students.  Beginning after Spring Break, teachers will be using video applications such as Zoom and/or Teams in Office/365 on a regular basis.  We are still in the planning and organization stage of exactly what this will look like.  I am meeting with teachers weekly and planning to the best of our ability as we get through this difficult time.  All teachers remain focused on providing the Essential Standards and also many supplemental activities for their students.
I will provide weekly updates to our Montemalaga families.  Please stay healthy and take good care of your families.  We miss seeing all of our great students and parents at Montemalaga!

All the best,
Mrs. Jody Pastell

Friday, March 13th Update

The Montemalaga staff has been working quickly to organize assignments and projects for students in all grade levels as we all struggle to get through this difficult time with the spread of the Coronavirus.  Please know that communication is very important during the next few weeks.  All teachers have shared how they plan to provide information and student work to be completed.  Should you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to email your teacher. I can also be reached at pastellj@pvpusd.net at any time.  We will respond back to you in a timely manner.
The teachers and I sincerely hope that your families all remain healthy.  We already miss being at school and participating in all the learning activities and programs that Montemalaga offers with our students and families.  Hope to see you soon.

All the best,
Mrs. Jody Pastell, Principal
