The beginning of the school year has been filled with busy days and much planning. Teachers are working with other school sites and the Educational Services Department to pilot two English Language Arts Programs (ELA). Only some teachers at some grade levels are piloting for ELA. In January, the second publisher will be used in classrooms. I look forward to hearing from teachers in the spring regarding their recommendation for our district’s English Language Arts adoption.
Montemalaga is also piloting two different Wellness/Mindfulness programs this year. All classrooms will be planning eight lessons on focus, making right choices, being aware of their own individual needs, etc. before this December. In January, we will continue being mindful with the second pilot for the rest of the school year. Teachers are collaborating and meeting during the Teacher Planning times each month. There are four elementary schools piloting curriculum and materials. The other six schools are sending teams to Los Angeles County Office of Education for professional development sessions. The roles of the schools will “flip-flop” during the 2018-2019 school year. All parents are invited to attend the October 3 Parent University Speaker Series at Palos Verdes Intermediate School from 6:00-7:00 in the MPR to learn more about Mindfulness.
In addition to the two different pilot programs, Montemalaga is also expanding our Character program this year. We will have four SPIRIT assemblies this year where students will be awarded SPIRIT sticks for their Montemalaga Keychains. If a student earned a Kindness/Caring, Personal Best, Responsibility, or Respect award last year—this year the child may earn a star pin to honor the good character. Some students continue to work on earning the awards from last year. Additionally, students can earn three new SPIRIT sticks in the areas of honesty, goodness, and courage. Please be sure to attend these special SPIRIT assemblies honoring our students. Teachers will be letting parents know ahead of time regarding students receiving awards. Montemalaga has a goal of being a school where all show respect, kindness, and responsibility daily.
Our students are making good choices. They are getting better at thinking before acting. The positive attitude is felt throughout the school. The teachers and I appreciate all your support. Fall is a very busy time for our school. Be sure to attend the Back to School Movie Night on October 6 and the Halloween Carnival on October27. This year will be another great year for Montemalaga!
