Science of Reading

  • The science of reading refers to a comprehensive body of research that informs evidence-based practices in literacy instruction.
  • It includes understanding how children learn to read and identifies the most effective methods for teaching reading skills.
  • Key concepts from this research include the Simple View of ReadingScarborough’s Reading Rope, and the Four-Part Processing Model for Word Recognition.
  • These concepts highlight the importance of phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension as essential components of reading instruction.

READING CLUB (Response to Intervention)

Welcome! I am happy to be a part of your child's learning team. As a Reading Specialist, it is my mission to help every child reach their potential as a reader and writer. I strive to develop:
  • eager readers who are excited to choose, read, and talk about books
  • skilled readers who use their "toolbox" of strategies
  • aware readers who think critically about what they read and see literacy as a key to connect with the world

A little about Reading Club: This year we are using three programs: Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), Orton Gillingham Phonics, and Heggerty Phonemic Awareness.  The lessons include phonemic awareness instruction (for K-2 students), phonics and spelling practice, reading books together, and comprehension conversations. Students are first assessed to find their individual reading level and then instructed to progress through more difficult levels. The overall goal is to catch up students to be reading independently at grade level. Each Reading Club group has up to 4 students in grades K-5.
