Principal's Message - Fall 2016

Fall 2016
Welcome to Montemalaga Elementary School! Montemalaga is one of the ten elementary schools in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. Montemalaga’s students number about five hundred in grades Transitional Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. The outstanding teachers and staff at Montemalaga incorporate rigorous academics while educating the “whole child.” Academic accomplishments and school success have been recognized by Montemalaga being awarded a National Blue Ribbon School as well as a Gold Ribbon School during the 2015-2016 school year. Academics, student accomplishments, and striving for “world class” are very important goals. Students learn in the science lab, visit the newly constructed school library, spend weekly time in the technology lab, have physical education with a physical education teacher, have music instruction with the opportunity to play instruments, experience art activities, and attend assemblies supporting their learning throughout the school year.

The PTA and parent involvement are vital to Montemalaga. Volunteers work with teachers to provide small group instruction and to support student learning. Parents help with all of the special events and activities planned at the school. Every month is busy with activities that create a very close and connected school community. Montemalaga is very proud of our Parent Education Evenings. These are evening events where parents attend workshops with their children to experience an actual writing lesson or math lesson based on newly implemented strategies and acquired skills. Other guest speakers have presented on topics such as internet safety, John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success (developing good character), parenting skills, library connections in our community, etc. Montemalaga also enjoys many “family nights” scheduled during the school year. The PTA plans a fall social, a fall festival, a bingo night, a sweetheart dance, and an outdoor movie night. These events encourage a strong sense of community and help develop long-lasting friendships.

When you walk down the halls of Montemalaga you will be greeted by smiles and so many happy faces. The school environment is very positive where children are expected to do their personal best every day. A great deal of pride exists at Montemalaga. We are the Eagles and our motto is: Soar to Success.

By the second day of school, students (Transitional Kindergarten-Fifth Grade) were settled in classrooms and daily routines.  Montemalaga’s outstanding staff and parents work together to clearly communicate school guidelines and expectations.  Our students are confident, happy, and respectful to everyone on our campus.

Last year, Montemalaga began the schoolwide implementation of Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.  Students studied monthly character traits of cooperation, determination, confidence, team spirit, fitness, enthusiasm, etc. all leading to always doing your personal best.  During the 2016-2017 school year, Montemalaga is expanding the student awareness of these important character traits.  We are the Montemalaga Eagles and We Soar to Success.  Every student will have the opportunity to earn spirit certificates and key chains for their backpacks at our regularly scheduled SPIRIT assemblies. The awards are based on the following:  S (Show Responsibility for Actions, O (Offer Act of Kindness/Caring, A (Always Do Your Personal Best), and R (Respect Yourself and Others).  All teachers will be providing the lists of students who have successfully fulfilled the requirements for each letter in the word SOAR.

The development of the “whole child” is a priority at Montemalaga.  We work hard learning core academics and we continue to understand the importance of being outstanding citizens in our community.  The Montemalaga teaching staff prepares all students to be successful learners in the 21st Century
