Happy Summer!
Can you believe it's our last day of school? You did it! You are officially  3rd graders.
Thanks for all your hard work. You really did a fantastic job!
I hope you have fun this summer, and remember...keep reading.
Love,
Ms. Smith

Good morning everyone,

This is our last week of school. I am sad I can’t be with you all this week. Normally we would have had fun activities all week, culminating in a class party and yearbook signing. This year may be different, but I tried to come up with some fun things to do this week. They are optional and are meant to be fun review.  Please check our weekly assignment list and resource page for details.

You will have the option of doing a virtual “Escape from 2nd Grade”, a math mystery hunt, a summer bucket list, and virtual beach field trip. You may also finish your 2nd Grade Memory book. There are two Flipgrids you may do as well. One is for sharing what you did this week, and the other is for saying Happy Summer to your classmates.

Remember to pick up your personal belongings on your assigned day and return library books and chromebooks or any technology you borrowed. In addition to the bags of personal belongings outside the classroom on the shelf, there will be a small lost and found bin of things that didn’t have names on them. Please check in there if you are missing anything, especially headphones.

We are not doing our regular Zoom sessions this week.

Wednesday at 10:00 is our Zoom with the other 2nd grades to see the animal show. Be sure to use the invitation that was sent to you.

Thank you for the class End-of- Year gift. I haven’t been into the school to pick it up yet, but I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

You have all worked so hard during this time. I have missed you and enjoyed teaching all of you this year. I wish you all a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

Ms. Smith

Wednesday Animal Zoom with other 2nd Grades

CORRECTION to my earlier message: Our Animal Zoom meet with the other second grades is NEXT Wednesday, June 10th. Sorry for the mix-up. We will still meet at our regular time this Wednesday though for our class awards. Thank you!

Monday, June 1, 2020

Good morning everyone.

I hope everyone is safe this morning.

This week we will be winding up our academic year. Thank you for all you’ve done to make the most of this unique time period we are going through.

Please see the weekly overview for the reading assignment choices. You may either do the regular Wonders assignments or read and do activities for Dinosaurs Before Dark.

In math we are finishing up geometry and working on patterns. You may work through the chapter at your own pace this week and next. You may use any unused pages in the workbook for summer math practice. IXL starred assignments are optional this week.

In writing you will be working on a commemorative class coin and 2nd grade memory book.

We have our class party tomorrow, Tuesday, at our regular Zoom time of 9:00. It will probably go longer than 30 minutes. Please be sure to have your child prepared ahead of time. I sent an email about this, so please let me know if you have any questions, so no one misses out on the fun. That email will also be posted later today for reference.

On Wednesday we will have our class awards, which are awards I give for each child, at our regular Zoom time of 9:00. This will be our last Room 8 Zoom.

Also on Wednesday we will be joining the other 2nd grades on a fun Zoom meeting at 10:00. They will be seeing a live animal show with an animal expert. Please let me know if you haven’t received an invitation. Join if you can.

Next week there will be some fun academic activities. We will have a math challenge, 2nd Grade “Escape Room” activity, online virtual beach field trip, and summer bucket list activity. There will also be the option to say good-bye and happy summer on Flipgrid.

Remember to pick up your child’s personal belongings next week on your assigned day. There will also be an end-of-year goody-bag in your child’s bag of things that the room parents put together.

Speaking of room parents- thank you to Mrs. Woo, Mrs. Winkler, and Mrs. Vancura for being our room moms this year. They have done a spectacular job of helping whenever we needed something.

Also thank you to all who were able to come in this year to help in the classroom. Your help makes a big difference.

And finally, thank you to all parents for helping your child learn always, but especially these past 2 ½ months where you have been your child’s teacher while trying to juggle everything else.

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Ms. Smith

2nd grade memories brainstorm
This is the list of 2nd grade memories the class brainstormed on Zoom today. They may use these ideas or their own to write about the journal topic. Remember to email your paragraph.

Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Good morning everyone!

I hope you had a restful holiday weekend.

My apologies for not having a post last Monday. It is in the Post section of our edlio site. I’m not sure why it didn’t make it to the front page. It is in there if you want to read it.

This week we will be focusing on summarizing and main idea/detail in non-fiction texts. Our vocabulary strategy will be Greek and Latin roots.

In writing, please put the finishing touches on your animal report and e-mail your report to me by Friday. I have also set up a Flipgrid topic, so you can share your report there if you wish. Also don’t forget to do your journal topic on Tuesday. Email me your paragraph. We will be using the ideas next week.

We finished learning about time in math last week. We are moving on to geometry for the final weeks.

In science, continue learning about matter on IXL. Be sure to check out the Brainpop Jr. videos through the portal if you haven’t yet completed them. There are also two short Mystery Science lessons this week.

I see some students have accessed the Epic website for reading. It's a fun way to get your 20 minutes of reading in. You can choose books by topic, title, or reading level. My 4th grade son is enjoying a series called "The Best Quiz Ever". If you find a book you like on Epic or anywhere else, recommend it to others on Flipgrid. Epic also has videos related to interests you may have. We have Epic for free until June 30th.

Announcements:

June 8th and 9th: Personal belongings pick up and textbook/ library book drop off:

There will be tables set up in the main hallway by the MPR by grade level if you need to drop anything off.
